So, we booked a 3day/2night package for part of our stay at the Perhentian Islands. The package included several snorkeling trips to various spots throughout the islands. The snorkeling would be a first for Sam, but I assured her she would love it! Our first stop was a small inlet where we saw three different types of coral and TONS of different species of fish. The largest of which was…a BARRACUDA!
We were snorkeling around enjoying all the scenery and taking lots of pictures when out of the corner of my eye I saw the barracuda watching us. I knew it wouldn’t come after us because we didn’t have anything shiny on, and they are attracted to shiny things. I was however, incredibly concerned that Sam would notice and freak out…which does sound like something she would do right? A few minutes later Sam is right next to me, grabbing my arm and tapping on my mask to point out the barracuda… “Oh man, I was hoping she wouldn’t notice”!
Everything was fine and we continued to check out the coral and fish. After an hour of snorkeling our guide drove us to Turtle point where we could see turtles and hopefully be able to snorkel with them.
Sure enough we were lucky to spot several HUGE green turtles (the only variety I hadn’t seen in the wild)! These particular turtles are incredibly rare…so much so that they are on the endangered species list. We saw several of them and it was amazing to see how quickly they moved through the water. In the words of our guide, they are… “Fast. Fast. FAST!” The bigger one we saw was probably 2-3 feet long! See the pictures posted ☺
Our entire snorkeling experience was amazing and we are really looking forward to our next trip out…
